Winter Fuel Allowance, How Do We Get it?

Ask a Question
Winter Fuel Allowance, How Do We Get it?
Mrs Linda Staib-Jensen asks

I understand we can benefit from a government winter fuel allowance of £250 per year. We have not received this, either this year nor last year. Who should I contact to recover this allowance?

The answer to this question has been updated for the year 2016/17.

The winter fuel allowance is supplied by the government and is available to most people who have reached the qualifying age on or before 5 May 1953 (for winter 2016 to 2017 - this date changes every year). The winter fuel allowance is a non-taxable annual payment designed to help pay for the extra cost of heating the home during the winter months. There are a number of stipulations that will decide who is eligible for this payment. The amount you receive will also be dependant on a number of circumstances.

Age will be one of the major factors to how much you can receive. If you normally live in the UK on your own you should be entitled to £200. If you are 80 or over and live alone you could be entitled to £300.

Eligibility Requirements

The amount of winter fuel allowance you receive will be dependant on a number of factors. Factors that can make a difference in the amount you receive will include:

  • Whether or not you live with another person who is also eligible for the winter fuel allowance
  • If your partner receives income based job seeker’s allowance (JSA) or pension credits
  • If you live in a care home or reside in an independent hospital and receive or don’t receive pension credits or JSA

Automatic Payments

Those who are eligible for the winter fuel allowance and are receiving a state pension or certain other state benefits do not need to apply. The fuel allowance should be sent automatically. If you think you are entitled to this allowance but don’t receive a pension or state benefits then you will have to make a claim. Claim forms are available from mid August onwards. Those who claim on or before September should receive the allowance by Christmas. Anyone who claims after September may not get their allowance until after Christmas. If you are eligible you will only need to make a claim once; after you claim the allowance it should be sent automatically each year.

Your situation may be slightly different. ask a question below ↓ and our editorial team will reply with our advice.

Backdated Fuel Allowances

You can make a claim for backdated payments for previous winter fuel allowances you may have missed. However, these backdated payments only apply to particular years. In order to claim your winter fuel allowance and to make a claim for backdated payments you should telephone the winter fuel payment helpline on 0800 731 0160. You can also download a claim form from the GOV.UK website or the Pension Service website.

this issue is not as clear cut as you make out some people say that you have to apply for this allowance and others say that you get it automatically without applying for it it should be crystal clear to everyone exactly according to your date of birth when you can apply for heating allowance.

FinancingRetirement Editor 17/03/2015 at 2:10 pm
@Jackie - everyone is entitled to winter fuel payments. So you will get it in your qualifying year and beyond. You will also be informed when you are entitled to it.
Jackie 14/03/2015 at 5:04 pm
I was born in 1953 does this mean that I will not qualify for the fuel allowance until I retire in 2016 or will I not get it at all.
FinancingRetirement Editor 22/01/2015 at 12:19 pm
@JAckie - The amount of Winter Fuel Payment you can receive each winter can vary according to your personal circumstances. Your age or other people living with you who are also eligible can affect the amount you receive. So if you qualify and live with someone under 80 who also qualifies you would get £100, as would your husband. I hope this helps.
JAcKie 21/01/2015 at 8:56 pm

Hi, I was born 8.12. 52.work part time and get DLA. should I be getting heating allowance?
FinancingRetirement Editor 08/12/2014 at 12:59 pm
@queenbee - As specified in the article, those who are eligible for the winter fuel allowance and are receiving a state pension or certain other state benefits do not need to apply. I hope this helps.

FinancingRetirement Editor 22/10/2014 at 11:48 am
@Noddy - Yes, the winter fuel payments were introduced by the Labour Government in a bid to combat poverty among pensioners. They were fixed at £20 a year per household in 1997-98 and raised to £100 in 1999-2000 and to £200 in 2000-1. I hope this helps.
noddy 21/10/2014 at 5:29 pm
Please can you tell me what the payment for fuel allowance was in 1997
Ol 08/10/2014 at 6:15 pm
How unfair. Not only do we NOT get our pension and bus pass but no winter fuel allowance either. Why should we not get it at 60 like it used to be? Whats up do we suddenly not feel the cold and why do we have to wait? I am 61 born June 1953.

If you were born on or before 5th January 1952, you are eligible for this years winter fuel payment (2013-14). For next winters payment (2014-15) you will need to have been born on or before 5th January 1953 and so on, unless the qualifying dates are changed by the government.
If you are not yet of state pension age, or in receipt of other benefits, you will need to make a claim. People of state pension age, and those in receipt of certain benefits, will automatically receive the payment.

My date of birth was June 1950 and did not apply for state pension until Sept 2012 after being made redundant. I dont claim any other benefits so pay rent, council tax and bills from savings and state pension. I dont have a private pension and I have not received any winter fuel allowance. I dont like having to claim benefits and thought this was automatically paid to you when receiving state pension.
